InMe, Lost Alone and Mojo Fury at Soul Cellar, Southampton
02/03/2012
Remember what I said about gig photography being hard? Course you do; it was this morning. Well, the act of it is pretty easy. Secure a spot at the front. Get sufficiently drunk so you're not concerned with being in people's ways. Take 1200 photos.
The tough bit is when you're a bit more discerning, and you realise that there's clipped lights and mic stands all over the place. It's clear that you couldn't move from your perch the entire time. You've got 900 photos of the side of the singer's face. Which one is the keeper?
I wish I could shoot gigs where there's a barrier. That would be more fun. And less terrifying. And I might get a better hit-rate. Might.
In spite of my own striving for mediocrity, InMe were excellent. I've never seen them before, but they played a solid, varied set. They appear to have a pretty loyal following in Southampton, which is cool. If it were me, I'd have put them in a larger venue. Soul Cellar has good acoustics and lights, but it's pretty small. Still, I'd rather fill a small venue than stand on my own in a large one.
