Fireworks!

11/06/2022

Went back up to the Midlands to see family and have a bonfire. It was a very nice time.

You know when you you have an argument with someone, and part-way through that argument you realise that they're right? You have two choices: 1. you're an adult and you go "Oh damn...you're right. Sorry", or 2. you carry on arguing and gradually trying to steer the argument round to make it look like that's what you were saying this whole time and they just didn't get it (yes I'm aware that this is gaslighting's nextdoor neighbour, but I'd be surprised if there was anyone who'd never done it through childish pride rather than abusive psychological manipulation).

Anyway that's what Apple is doing with the iPad right now. They never wanted multitasking on the iPad, and now they're reluctantly admitting that it was needed all along. In a way, they're a victim of their own success. They made a device that got so powerful, and that power revealed so much potential, that they had to walk back a bunch of claims like "this isn't a regular computer; multitasking is irrelevant". They taught two generations of technophobes the value and power of computers, then kept one of the best features of a computer concealed.

The fact is, an iPad occupies a difficult space. For some, it's a full time computer. For some, it's the antidote to a computer. For others, it's a work tool that is so hilariously unusable, it's practically a meme to try and fail to use it to do your full time job.

Apple's unwillingness to adopt a MacOS-style desktop on the iPad, instead favouring split screen, pop-over, and now stage manager, is Apple slowly coming round to the notion that multitasking on an iPad is inevitable and necessary. These tiny concessions to multitasking over generations are a frustratingly protracted deconstruction of the benefits of it, that will eventually lead us to fully-functioning multitasking on the iPad, hopefully just in time for my cremation.

Stage Manager is so close to useful, but how do I open any random app into this UI (I know I can do it but it's a right old faff)? Why can't I swipe down or left in Stage Manager and search for any app to bring it in? Why can't I save that configuration for future recall? Why can't I do anything that's actually useful?

For a computer that is so accessible for so many people, the unintuitive UI on some aspects of the iPad are absolutely baffling. The fact that I now have to put it into multitasking mode to be able to use more than one app at a time is ridiculous. If I need to watch a YouTube tutorial to use a feature like this, it has failed at a fundamental level no matter how good it might be when I finally figure it out. How did this idea even get out of initial concepts before someone went "hey won't that be really annoying to use?"?

I really hope that Apple sorts this out soon. iPad OS 16 is so close to being good that it irritates me to even look at my iPad.

Trick or Treat!

11/01/2022

I've never been trick or treating before. It was quite fun.

Shoreham-by-Sea House Boat Walk

10/30/2022

Last time we came down here, we turned left instead of right and missed this lovely little riverside street with a huge variety of house boats.

Leaf Peepin' at Sheffield Park

10/29/2022

Like every other person in Sussex, we wanted to go and look at the leaves at Sheffield Park. I've never been to Sheffield Park but I am partial to the National Trust.

Finally finished The Handmaid's Tale. I didn't really want to. I've immensely enjoyed having this world in my peripheral. It's so vivid and bleak and brutal, and realistic. I've loved thinking about it in my downtime and I haven't been in a rush to finish it. I trap myself sometimes, with "I am enjoying this book and I must devour it", but that hasn't been the case here at all.

One thing that has become clear to me; no-one writes dystopian future books better than women. I don't want to go into why I think that is, but the fact remains. In my recent reads; Margaret Atwood, Ursula K Le Guin, and NK Jemisin have provided these incredibly real worlds that have broken my heart over and over again.

The last two weeks I guess

10/22/2022

Lots of work, lots of badminton, not a lot of much else.

We went to a small craft fayre the other day. Little homemade indie stuff. Bit twee for me, for the most part. But in one of the rooms they were listening to The Cooper Temple Clause's obscenely-underrated Kick Up The Fire, And Let the Flames Break Loose and, if anyone noticed, they might have wondered why a guy fitting my description was just standing there and listening to the music at the craft fayre.

I love that record, though. In general, The Cooper Temple Clause were perfectly placed alongside the manufactured garage rock revolution of the early-mid 2000s in the UK, with Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand et al (don't you hate people who say "et al"? Pretentious). There's real depth and soul to their songs, which is severely lacking in the simple, cynical, radio-friendly dreck that their peers were spewing out into the scene. For some reason I have a real affinity with anyone who's willing to sacrifice all classical notions of success in the pursuit of doing what they want.

The Hives and The Strokes were good as well. In many ways I credit/blame The Strokes and their success for flooding the UK music scene with so much samey trash - but you can hardly blame them for their success. That's kinda the point.

I love crisps. Tesco is absolutely crushing it with their seasonal crisps right now. They're all so good. I love crisps.

Squirrels in the garden

10/09/2022

Found this lovely garden in Lewes whilst Tabitha was playing badminton. Lots of tame squirrels around, which this cat was also enjoying.

New camera photo dump

10/08/2022

I heard that DSLRs are dead. Mine seemed fine but better safe than sorry. The Canon EOS R5 is an outrageous bit of kit though. I've been really enjoying it.

Friday

10/07/2022

It's Friday. We watched a video on why some cats have favourites and now family life has become a very passive aggressive competition to win the cat's love. I'm going to win, because I'm going to cheat.

When Tabitha's school runs trips, they invite parents to volunteer to help. I always volunteer because it's a lot of fun, but they never give enough notice as to whether your help is needed. This time they gave less than one working day's notice, and messaged me this morning to say "no thanks", so I booked in some calls for Monday. They then called this afternoon to see if I was available to help! Two working hours notice.

I feel like I want to let them know that the reason they get so many people drop out is that normal adults need more than 5 hours notice to allocate time in their working week, but I don't know how to do it without sounding like a fake-important jerk. So what I'll do is whinge on my blog instead. That feels very 2005.

Friday

09/24/2022

I said I wasn't going to post more Friday posts, then did two in a row. Self motivation is a strange thing.

If someone is standing in a supermarket, avoidably blocking an aisle just because they're totally unaware of their size and surroundings, you should be legally allowed to flick their ear. Not to harm them; just a quick reminder that there are other people on the planet.

The Weekend

09/19/2022

Went to Andy and Alanna's wedding. Ate lots of nice food. Dressed like a fancy boy. Went for a long walk. Ate more nice food.

Friday

09/16/2022

I brushed Friday this week and now she can stand to be in the same room as me. She actually follows me around and sits on the toilet whilst I brush my teeth.

There's a girl in Tabitha's school called Jasper, and every morning I see her on her way in and she says "morning Jasper" and I say "morning Jasper", and I don't know why but I really like that part of my day.

Friday is turning into a proper cat and, as such, she isn't really interested in being near people unless it's by accident. I don't even have any recent pictures of her to share and I haven't for a little while. This little crossover period from cute kitten to grumpy cat where you have a cute, grumpy kitten is weird. Grumpy cute faces are just as believable on kittens as they are on toddlers.

I know I'm literally the last person to start using it but I have become obsessed with Midjourney. I'm having so much fun thinking of prompts.
