Hector and Hummingbird by Nicholas John Frith

Hector and Hummingbird is a book about that friend who gets on your nerves, but you really miss when they're not around. It's basically a book about why anyone still has any interest in talking to me. The art style is completely delightful, and it ends with a game (that Tabitha insists on playing every single time we read it) where you go back through the book and hunt for a list of animals that you might have missed. One of the things I like most about this book is the fact that you're not just looking for "bird" and "insect" - it's "Andean cock-of-the-rock" (that one's new to me, too!) and "leaf-cutter ant", which I consider to be pretty great for broadening a child's horizons.
You can buy Hector and Hummingbird from Amazon (no referral links ever), but we borrowed it from our local library so you might try there first.
