Crisps for Breakfast: Walkers Taste Test [2]

21/02/2009

Annoyingly, I've been pretty underwhelmed by the range of crisps serving Walkers so well right now. The only one I'd eat again after the last taste test was the Builder's Breakfast (which, coincidentally, I did eat again!) and the only other one I really liked the sound of was the Onion Bhaji. Lucky me, that's part of today's test!

Chilli & Chocolate

We wanted to get these out of the way. I don't really get the idea of chilli with chocolate, so I just wanted to get rid of them! Nose-in-bag, they're just like a sweeter version of Walkers' Sweet Chilli Sensations. Unfortunately, my anxiety was well-founded and they taste awful - like the aforementioned Sensations, but with a dusty, dog chocolate (not a euphemism) taste. I've noticed a pattern here; Charlotte is refusing to eat most of them! She didn't like these to the point that she couldn't even bear to eat them!

Crispy Duck & Hoisin

Another that Charlotte wouldn't eat! I don't get this flavour - I'm no connoisseur of Chinese food, but to me these just tasted like barbecue flavour with cucumber in there. I didn't even realise that cucumber should be involved in this flavour, but there you go. These taste really good, but I don't think this is what it's supposed to taste like!

Onion Bhaji

I had high hopes for this flavour. I love onion bhajis and I love Indian food, so this should've been a no-brainer. They smell just like the "authentic" onion bhajis you get from Tesco, so they're off to a good start. Disappointingly, they taste like Walkers decided to leave the cheese out of Cheese & Onion. A disappointing end to a relatively disappointing range of crisps!

Verdict

I had intended to test the winner from each round against each other, but there wasn't really a clear winner here. If I was going to recommend purely on taste, I'd definitely have the Builder's Breakfast, but don't eat them if you're not a fan of egg. I can totally see the Crispy Duck & Hoisin being the most successful - they've just got that crisp taste to them (and they're not vile like the other flavours!)

In conclusion, don't go out of your way to get these crisps. They're really not what the marketing made them out to be, but what is these days?!
