099 070908 - On a life without leather

09/07/2008

One thing that has always irked me about my vegetarianism is hypocrisy when it comes to leather. There's never been any conscious good reason that I've not removed it from my life, and I've never purposefully carried on using it. However, recently I decided to start removing leather from my life. I have a new belt and I have a new wallet, which are the two items that I have always wanted to replace as I essentially rely on them and it massively contradicts everything I stand for in that respect.

Looking around town today to replace my shoes, I made an irritating discovery. Pretty much all shoes contain leather in some way/shape/form. Even my beautiful Nike 6.0s. I can't wear "smart" shoes, as they all have leather uppers. This means I'm probably going to find it very difficult to go clubbing, to weddings, appear in court et cetera. I am now in search of a trainer manufacturer other than New Balance or Converse that I can get my animal-friendly shoes from. Suggestions welcome.

Lucky for me that my car doesn't have a leather interior.
